How did you choose your specific area of study?

I stumbled upon the human factors field out of luck, my undergrad program didn’t offer a human factors course, so it wasn’t until I was interning as a research assistant at a defense contracting company that I learned about the human factors field. The group I was working for worked closely with human factors specialists who introduced me to the area. I found the work they were doing to be extremely interesting, so I applied to Masons HFAC program!

How did your academic experiences in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences impact you?

My experience within the CHSS has definitely impacted my confidence in my professional writing and presenting abilities. Not only do all of the courses and staff provide you with a comprehensive insight into the field of human factors, but they also really facilitate you in building your academic and professional identity and the college as a whole has a very supportive environment.

What advice would you give to an incoming cohort of graduate students?

Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and make sure to make as many connections as you can. I came into the field with limited experience in the area, which was a bit intimidating, so if you’re also feeling that way, just know that everyone is starting at different places and that is okay! CHSS is a super supportive program so never hesitate to reach out for help if you need it.

What are your current career plans following graduation? What are your long-term career goals?

Currently I am pursuing opportunities within the defense industry and really enjoy working with the implementation of AI as well as working with VR/AR systems. Long term I would like to help lead initiatives that improve the safety and efficiency of defense technologies through conducting research on soldier performance and the effects of stress, fatigue, and environmental conditions. In addition, I would like to lead research concerning the trust that operators exhibit towards these emerging technologies.
