As part of its mission to promote, sustain, and celebrate excellence in teaching practices among Mason’s faculty members and graduate students, the university’s Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning offers PROV 701: Preparing for Careers in the Academy to a select group of PhD students and terminal degree MFA students, to help them prepare for careers in higher education.
Students are selected on a competitive basis for a one-credit course geared towards helping them understand their own teaching philosophies, develop best practices for teaching and learning, and gain strategies for approaching the academic job market. The program comprises eight three-hour sessions of coursework during the fall semester, a year-long online discussion forum, and individualized mentoring during the spring semester. The course culminates with a spring reception hosted by Mason Provost David Wu and the Stearns Center.
