BA in Psychology

Margot M. Cabrera-Sotelo, 2012

Margot M. Cabrera-Sotelo
A transfer student to Mason, Margot decided to get involved in research. She served as an assistant on three psychology research projects. The last was a study of the process of empowerment, and Margot observed court cases in the District of Columbia and recruited participants for the study. These experiences led her to apply to the highly competitive honors program in psychology, where students conduct independent research for their final honors project.

Beyond the classroom, she joined Mason's Lending Hands program, which provides a wide range of assistance to orphan children. She also has volunteered in her community library and at her church. She uses her native Spanish in her work with low-income families through the bilinguial Strengthening Families Program.

It has been a long journey for Margot, who left her country, family, and friends to pursue her dream of getting a degree. From ESL classes to a psychology degree from Northern Virginia Community College, and now at Mason in the psychology honors program, Margot has shown courage, resolve, and motivation to succeed while taking on ever more difficult challenges.

She received the Dean’s Challenge Scholarship for 2011-2012.
