Applied Developmental Psychology

A second-year master’s student in Applied Developmental Psychology at George Mason University, Reem Shawkat is working under the mentorship of Dr. Olga Kornienko to explore the role of peer networks and family in the development of ethnic-racial identity in minority youth. Reem’s career goals focus on informing interventions for at-risk communities by conducting research on diverse youth and developing new frameworks to conceptualize their unique development. In the long term, Reem hopes to develop programming to help minimize negative outcomes for minority populations by tapping into the protective factors of ethnic-racial identity to promote wellbeing.
